How are you supposed to know if Shuffle is on or off?

Just hover your mouse pointer over the second button in the bottom panel.
a)If it shows 'Random off',then it means that shuffle is off.
b)If it shows 'Random',it means that shuffle is on.

THANK YOU...awesome. had the most difficult time finding out how to randomize playlists :) by the way, it's the last button to the right in the lower Left corner of VLC

You are Welcome. As far as the position of button is concerned , the version of VLC that i use has the option of 'random' in the second button from the left.

It's all good but your random is not random, it simply create a shuffle once and never change?>???

WinAmp 2.78 did this very nicely in that it allowed you to actually shuffle the order in which the songs were ordered in the playlist. This was useful for creating a playlist, shuffling it, then saving it shuffled, allowing multiple listening sessions to save the same randomness. There isn't a way to shuffle the playlist's contents, not just the playback of the playlist itself?

to turn on the shuffle simply open your playlist and its a button at the bottom, to some things up a little more simply

I almost never comment, but i did a few searching and wound up here "HOW TO SHUFFLE SONGS IN VLC MEDIA PLAYER ?".

And I do have 2 questions for you if you usually do not mind.

Is it only me or does it look like a few of these responses appear like they
are left by brain dead people? :-P And, if you are posting at other sites, I would like to keep
up with anything new you have to post. Would you list of every one of your public pages like your Facebook page, twitter feed, or
linkedin profile?

How do you do it on the Android phone app?

I too would like to know how to get the "random" shuffle feature for the Android phone app.

For those interested, further info on how to get VLC shuffle to work with Android phone:
Based on my experimenting the shuffle option is not available when browsing music under "artists" or "albums". However, when under the "songs" tab there is a symbol with crossed up and down arrows in the lower right corner that allows shuffle play among all the songs listed. So if you want to shuffle songs within an album or within a listing of a particular artist it seems you're out of luck. You can only shuffle play all the songs on the device. Quite a range of songs on my device but I suppose it's better than nothing.
